April 26th will mark the 21st anniversary of what’s regarded as the worst accident ever in the history of nuclear power. And now the disaster is the subject of a new controversial video game featuring a post-apocalyptic world of Chernobyl. We talk to a documentary filmmaker and survivor of the Chernobyl accident and get her thoughts on the game’s sensitive subject matter. Is a video game based around a real-life nuclear disaster doing more harm than good?

An extraordinary documentary film “Chernobyl 20″ supported by Physicians for Social Responsibility (Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1985) and screened at the Los Angeles International Short Film festival in September 2006 and Kitka’s choral concert will be presented on Saturday, April 21 to benefit the work of Biointensive for Russia (BfR)! The proceeds will benefit children with radiation-induced cancer in Oncological Center in Belarus and BfR’s partners who are teaching and experimenting with the GROW BIOINTENSIVE Sustainable Mini-Farming method in Eurasia.

Come at 6:45 for the 7 pm showing of “Chernobyl 20,” a compelling 28-minute film that will be introduced by its director and producer, Yelena Zmushko*. The documentary presents the lingering radiation effects of the 1986 nuclear catastrophe at a children’s cancer center in Belarus, Zmushko’s home country. Revealing the suffering still being experienced twenty years after the accident, it exposes the disinformation presented by the national and international authorities.
Next, the Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble** will perform a capella songs devoted to vegetable garden themes. The renowned nine-woman choir has concertized nationally and internationally, including on radio and television. It is considered the foremost interpreter of Balkan and Slavic songs in the US. In a collaboration with a nonprofit organization in Oregon, Kitka held a concert previously to benefit BfR’s Russian partner, the NGO Viola.

Proceeds of the benefit will support GROW BIOINTENSIVE workshops and experiments to be held by two of BfR’s Eurasian partners: the NGO Viola, in and near the Chernobyl radiation zone, and the Agrocenter in Uzbekistan, teaching also in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The Children’s Oncological Center of Belarus, featured in the Chernobyl film, will also benefit.

Dear Ms. Zmushko:

I write with gratitude and great admiration for your documentary film, Chernobyl 20. You donated a screening of your excellent documentary at Physicians for Social Responsibility/UCLA Institute of the Environment’s April 23 conference on Chernobyl. The audience responded with applause and awe as your film beautifully and compellingly tells a story about Chernobyl, and its radioactive legacy.

Your documentary reveals that the International Agency for Atomic Energy and other key agencies have been overtaken by the nuclear industry, and thus downplay risks associated with the Chernobyl accident. Your documentary shows the lies as well as how the lies shatter against the real-world damage still being experienced twenty years after the accident. You show real people living in the contaminated areas of Belarus-children in the region’s cancer center and families struggling to keep hopeful.

I believe your film should be widely seen. I wish it could be seen on public or cable television or via the internet. I wholeheartedly commend you for the heart and soul you put into the documentary. I would be glad to serve as a reference.

Sincerely, with gratitude,

Jonathan Parfrey

Executive Director

In her documentary Chernobyl 20, screened last Sunday at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment, Yelena Zmushko, a Chernobyl survivor, asks two women in a grocery store, newly repatriated residents of Chernobyl’s still-hot exclusion zone, to explain why so many gravestones in the local cemetery bear the names and ages of people who died in their 20s.

“Car accidents!” one of them finally says, as if she’s come up with an answer on a quiz show, and the other agrees. “Yes, lots of car accidents.”

Sunday’s program, organized by Physicians for Social Responsibility to remember the Chernobyl disaster, 20 years after reactor No. 4 exploded on April 26, 1986, might have been called a day of reckoning with denial.

clearly put your heart into it and I’m not surprised it’s connected with the

The main thing is getting people aware that the major thing is not
money, the major thing is morality. This is the message you are carrying in
your film. It’s not going to be propagated by the press to the degree that
you want to but it’ll be propagated that people in power want want to.
