About the Filmmaker

Yelena Zmushko is first time producer, writer, director, principal camera and editor of the documentary film “Chernobyl 20”. Her artistic experience includes published poetry, unpublished fiction and poetry writing. In 2004 poem “Who is there behind?” was nominated for best poems by poetry.com. She attended the Linguistic University in Minsk, Belarus and holds a MSBA degree from San Francisco State University. Filmmaking is her passion and medium for expressing her views and individuality. She took documentary filmmaking courses at Film and Arts Foundation of San Francisco and City College of San Francisco. Yelena Zmushko is originally from Mozyr, Gomel district, Belarus (former-USSR) where she lived in the area contaminated by radiation till the age of 21 before moving to the USA. “Chernobyl 20” is a personal search for truth about the effects of the Chernobyl catastrophe on her, her family and the generation of 90’s.
